EHI is currently preparing a historical context for the California Neighborhood in partnership with Corn Island Archeology for Louisville MSD. Located south of Broadway between 9th and roughly 22nd street, the California neighborhood was among the first subdivisions of Louisville. Hosting multiple rail lines, a mix of industries attracted residents to the area. Large immigrant and African American populations occupied the homes and tenement buildings for nearly 100 years. Disinvestment in the latter half of the 20th century has created a patchwork of open lots, factories, and residences. Through census analysis, historical maps, and a variety of literature, EHI is piecing together the cultural fingerprint of this neighborhood that has remained relatively undocumented.
